The tone of Ode 1 in Antigone is somber and describes the pride of mankind.  Ode 1 explains how great a man can be.  Through his intelligence and discipline mankind can do anything they want, except for escaping death.  The somber tone of Antigone is created through images of gloomy difficult trials of life.  The tone is created by showing how harsh life can be for all creatures, and shows how man can overcome obstacles of nature.  There is a caution expressed about not obeying laws, or anarchy, which also links into the somber tone.
